In separate news, Cleanliness workers protesting outside Ripon Building continued their sit-in for the eighth day on Friday, despite receiving a police notice to vacate. The protest began last week against the Greater Chennai Corporation’s plan to privatise solid waste management in Royapuram (Zone 5) and Thiru Vi Ka Nagar (Zone 6).
Many of the protesters, linked to the National Urban Livelihoods Mission, fear that privatisation will lower their wages, increase job insecurity, and worsen work conditions. On August 1, several workers were reportedly denied duty as private agencies took over.

The protest site remains lively with slogans and songs, supported by rights groups and students. Many women workers, some sole earners, worry their monthly income could drop from Rs 23,000 to Rs 15,000.
No official has yet met the protesters, but they hope for a peaceful resolution. “We won’t leave even if the police try to evict us,” said Prasanthi, expressing faith that officials will listen to their concerns.
