Chelsea Aims To Overcome St. Polten In Champions League After Arsenal Draw

Chelsea’s focus shifts to their upcoming Champions League match against St. Polten, following a 1-1 draw with Arsenal. Manager Sonia Bompastor has advised her team not to overanalyse the game as they aim to recover from dropping points for only the second time this season.

Chelsea’s attention now turns to Europe, where they will face the Austrian side at NV ARENA on Tuesday.

After a disappointing draw with Twente in their opening match, Chelsea secured their first win of the campaign by defeating Paris FC 4-0, with Alyssa Thompson playing a key role. Currently just outside the top four spots that guarantee quarter-final qualification, Chelsea is given an 85% chance of securing another victory against St. Polten.

Bompastor emphasised the importance of being more clinical in front of goal, noting that while Chelsea creates numerous chances, they have scored only 19 goals so far. “We’re a team that creates a lot of opportunities,” she said. “We can move the ball high up the pitch so then it’s down to finish them.” She urged her players to remain confident and avoid overthinking.

In terms of team news, goalkeeper Hannah Hampton did not travel with the squad due to an injury sustained against Arsenal. This comes after a challenging week for Hampton off the field, where she faced criticism from former England goalkeeper Mary Earps regarding her conduct with the Lionesses.

Bompastor dismissed suggestions that it might be beneficial for Hampton to step away from the spotlight, stating that being part of the team is likely what she desires most. “Hannah is fine,” Bompastor said. “It was tough for her, sure-I’m not going to deny that-but I think being around the team, playing games, is probably what she wants the most.”

With Hampton absent from this midweek trip, Switzerland international Livia Peng is set to start as goalkeeper. The summer signing also played against Twente earlier in their Champions League campaign. Bompastor expressed confidence in Peng’s abilities: “The way she is performing…she played well in the first game against Twente and is performing well in every training session.”

Potential Return of Key Player

A positive development for Chelsea is Lauren James’ potential return from injury. James has been out since sustaining an ankle injury during the Euro 2025 final but could make an appearance from the bench. Bompastor shared updates on James’ progress: “LJ is getting closer and closer,” she explained at her pre-match press conference.

The Blues are optimistic about their chances against St. Polten and are eager to continue their unbeaten run across all competitions this season. With key players returning and new talent stepping up, Chelsea aims to strengthen their position in Europe.
