Amid reports of delay in tax refunds, fraudsters are now targeting people through fake messages, emails and calls. These people, posing as officers of Income Tax Department, are asking for OTP and bank details from taxpayers.
On social media platform X (earlier Twitter), the Income Tax Department has warned people not to click on any unknown link or share their personal information. The department said that fake messages often contain small spelling mistakes and fake links are given, which look like real websites. Clicking on these may lead to identity theft, bank fraud or misuse of personal information.
The department has clearly said that any tax related information should be checked only on the official website www.incometax.gov.in. Do not trust refund update links received through email, SMS or social media.
How does this scam work?
Fraudsters send such messages in which it is written that your refund is stuck, the return is incomplete or immediate verification is required. Intimidating words like Urgent Action Required, Refund Pending or Penalty will be imposed are used in the message. As soon as a person clicks on the link, he is taken to a fake website, where he is asked for PAN number, bank details and OTP.
