According to the scriptures…
According to the scriptures, performing the last rites during a lunar eclipse or during the Sutak period is not considered auspicious. It is believed that performing the last rites during an eclipse or on the occasion of Sutak can have a negative impact on the family. There may be obstacles in the journey of the soul of the deceased. This is the reason why it is not considered right to perform the last rites during the eclipse period.
One should wait for the eclipse to end
If someone dies during an eclipse, then in such a situation the mortal remains of the deceased should be kept safe. After this, when the eclipse period is completely over, the last rites of the deceased should be started. The duration of lunar or solar eclipse is usually not long. Therefore, it is auspicious to wait during the eclipse period. Similarly, one should avoid performing the last rites of a deceased during Sutak period also.
