Delhi Capitals are set to overhaul their coaching setup ahead of the Indian Premier League 2027, with former Sri Lankan pace bowler Chaminda Vaas expected to join as bowling coach and former India captain Sourav Ganguly anticipated to take on the role of head coach, according to ESPNcricinfo.
In addition, former India leg-spinner Amit Mishra will become part of the coaching group, while legendary Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh is reported to be appointed as batting coach.
Vaas, Sri Lanka’s most successful fast bowler, ended his international career with 355 Test wickets and 400 ODI wickets. The 52-year-old played for the Deccan Chargers during the first three IPL seasons from 2008 to 2010 but has not previously coached in the league. He possesses extensive coaching experience, having worked with the Sri Lanka men’s team on multiple occasions between 2012 and 2022. He has also served as a fast-bowling consultant and academy mentor for Sri Lanka Cricket, aiding the development of young pacers.
His coaching career began as a consultant with the New Zealand men’s team and included a stint with Ireland during the 2016 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. At the franchise level, he coached NYS Lagos in the 2024 Zim Afro T10 League and was head coach of Kandy Royals in the Lanka Premier League 2026.
Mishra, aged 42, will embark on his IPL coaching career following a successful playing tenure in the tournament. He represented Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Lucknow Super Giants. Mishra retired from professional cricket in September last year and ranks among the leading wicket-takers in IPL history with 174 wickets from 162 matches. He also holds the record for most hat-tricks in the tournament, having taken three.
The changes in coaching personnel follow an agreement between Delhi Capitals’ co-owners GMR Sports India Pvt Ltd and JSW Sports, whereby the franchise’s operations will be managed by each owner in alternating two-year cycles. For the 2025 and 2026 seasons, GMR appointed Venugopal Rao as director of cricket, Hemang Badani as head coach, and Munaf Patel as bowling coach.
According to the report, Vaas and Mishra have already begun working with Delhi Capitals’ academy players in Delhi. The franchise has not yet officially announced the full coaching staff for the 2027 IPL season.
