According to the legend, in ancient times a demon named Mahishasura created terror in all the three worlds. Even heaven was not spared from his terror. There was chaos there too. Mahishasura wanted to conquer heaven so that he could have control over it. Thinking this, Mahishasura attacked heaven. In this war, the gods supported Devraj Indra and the demons supported Mahishasura.

However, Indra along with the gods had to face defeat in this war. After this all the gods including Indra were expelled from heaven. Then everyone reached Brahma Ji, the creator of the world. The Supreme Father advised him to go to Lord Vishnu, the protector of the world. After this all the gods went to Lord Vishnu and told the story of the terror of Mahishasura. After listening carefully to the gods, Lord Vishnu sent everyone to Lord Shiva. He himself also went to Mount Kailash with the gods.

At that time a power appeared from the glory of the Trinity. The gods greeted Goddess Chandraghanta. All three worlds echoed with the cheers of the mother. After this, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva provided weapons to Goddess Chandraghanta. Other gods also did this. Then Mother Goddess roared and challenged Mahishasura for war. A fierce war started between him and Mahishasura. Then the mother killed Mahishasura and freed all three worlds from his terror.
