Centre flags Grok misuse, issues notice to X over ‘obscene and sexually explicit’ content

New Delhi: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a formal notice to X Corp, raising serious concerns over the alleged misuse of its AI chatbot Grok to generate and circulate obscene, sexually explicit and derogatory content targeting women. The ministry has directed the platform to submit a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) within 72 hours, warning of legal consequences in case of non-compliance.

In the notice dated January 2, 2026, MeitY said it had received repeated representations, including from parliamentary stakeholders, that certain categories of content on X violate Indian laws relating to decency and obscenity. The ministry noted that Grok AI, integrated into the X platform, is allegedly being misused to create fake accounts and generate synthetic images and videos of women in a vulgar and degrading manner through prompts, image manipulation and AI-generated outputs.
