New Delhi. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has made a big announcement regarding the Census 2027 to be held in India. After a long wait, the government has made it clear that the census will be held in two phases and the same 33 questions will be asked which were to be asked in 2021, but the census was postponed due to the Corona epidemic. This time’s census is also being considered special because for the first time after 1931, information related to caste will also be included in it.

What information related to household will be asked in Census 2027?
The first phase of the census will be Houselisting and Housing Census, which will run from April 1 to September 30, 2026. During this period, census officials will collect basic but important information related to your household. In this it will be asked-
- House or building number.
- What material are the walls, roof and floor of the house made of?
- For what purpose is the house being used?
- How is the condition of the house?
This information will help the government to understand the actual housing situation in the country.
What questions will be asked about the family members?
In Census 2027, information related to people living indoors will also be collected. As-
- How many total people live in the house?
- Name and gender of the head of the household.
- Whether the head is from SC, ST or other class or not.
- How many rooms are there in the house?
- How many married couples live in the house?
- Is the house your own or rented?
These questions sound simple, but they decide the direction of government schemes.
Why would information about water, toilet and electricity be sought?
Census officials will also want to know what the basic amenities are like in your home. You will be asked-
- What is the main source of drinking water?
- What is the source of electricity?
- Is there a toilet or not, and what type?
- Dirty water drainage system?
- Are bathing facilities available or not?
The purpose of these questions is to bring out the real picture of cleanliness and basic facilities in the country.
Why is information about mobile, internet and LPG important?
This time the census has also focused on modern facilities. You will also be asked-
- Is there LPG or CNG connection in the house or not?
- Which fuel is used for cooking?
- TV, radio, mobile, smartphone or internet access?
- Does the family have any vehicle or not?
- Which grain is mainly eaten at home?
Home mobile number will also be taken, but the government has made it clear that it will be used only for census related information.
When will the population census be held and why is caste data important?
The second phase of the census i.e. population count will take place between February 9 and February 28, 2027. Its reference date has been fixed as March 1, 2027, at 12 midnight. In this phase, information related to caste will also be collected, which will be for the first time since 1931. It is believed that this data can have a big impact on the policies and reservation system in the future. Census 2027 is not just a data exercise, but will decide the direction the government’s plans will take in the coming years.
