New Delhi: A domestic cat has been credited with preventing a potentially dangerous house fire after alerting its owner to a malfunctioning PC powered by an NVIDIA RTX 4090. Reported by videocardz, the incident has since spread to tech circles and the news media.
The owner stated that the system started to produce smoke and a burning smell when unattended. The strange and continuous meowing of the cat made the owner find out what was wrong and the unusual sound and find that there was a melting power connector of the GPU. The system was noted to not shut down normally, and as such, the user had to manually unplug the system.
Cat’s alert prevents potential fire
The owner said that he heard the cat screaming in an adjacent room, which was not typical of this cat. Upon checking, they observed smoke coming out of the PC. The burning was found to be related to the power connector of the GPU, which is a reputed hot spot with certain high-end graphics configurations.
Swift intervention served to avert further escalation. The owner prevented a potential severe electrical fire by cutting off the power supply as soon as possible. The incident underscores the importance of early detection in reducing the damage.
Ongoing concerns around RTX 4090 power connectors
After its release, NVIDIA’s flagship GPU has been subject to repeated criticism due to its 16-pin 12VHPWR connectors. Overheating and melting have been reported all over the world and are usually related to incorrect cable insertion or the distribution of load.
The owner of this scenario argued that the cable was seated and checked on a regular basis. The setup did not require any adapter, and this brings new concerns to the PC hardware community on whether all such cases can be explained only by the error of the user.
Not the first animal rescue story
This accident is one of a series of animals that are averting disasters. In January this year, a kitten became an Internet sensation when it supposedly gave its life to rescue its owner in a house fire. In a different incident, a man and his dog were given credit in saving an old woman with her pet out of a burning house.
Although the research into the problem of GPU connectors is ongoing, one fact is notable in this scenario: the immediate reaction of a domestic animal could have worked out a much more severe result.
