Carlos Sainz Questions Red Bull’s Decision Not To Sign Him As Max Verstappen’s Team-Mate For 2025

Carlos Sainz has expressed confusion over Red Bull’s decision not to sign him as Max Verstappen’s teammate for the 2025 Formula One season.

Despite being aware of his replacement at Ferrari by Lewis Hamilton in 2024, Sainz secured a position with Williams alongside Alex Albon. Later, when Red Bull parted ways with Sergio Perez, a vacancy arose. However, despite discussions with Red Bull, Sainz was not considered for the seat.

Sainz shared his thoughts on the High Performance podcast, stating, “I think everyone’s having a really tough time being Max’s team-mate. I can only say that when I was Max’s team-mate, I didn’t have this tough time.” The two drivers had previously raced together during their rookie season at Toro Rosso in 2015. This past experience left Sainz puzzled about why he wasn’t chosen to partner with Verstappen again.

Speculation suggests that unresolved tensions between Sainz and Verstappen’s camps might have influenced Red Bull’s decision for the 2025 season. Addressing these rumours, Sainz remarked, “The only thing I can say is I genuinely get on well with Max. This is what people don’t see from the outside.” He emphasised that their rivalry during their first year at Toro Rosso was healthy and that they now share a good relationship.

Despite these assurances from Sainz, Red Bull opted for Liam Lawson to fill the second seat after Perez’s exit. However, Lawson was replaced by Yuki Tsunoda after just two races due to difficulties with the car. Sainz believes he could have formed a strong partnership with Verstappen if given the opportunity.

Reflecting on his career and teammates, Sainz stated, “I’ve been team-mates with Charles [Leclerc], with Lando [Norris], with Nico Hulkenberg, very quick guys, and probably the best in the sport.” He acknowledged Alex Albon’s speed at Williams and expressed his desire to compete against top drivers. Confident in his abilities, Sainz remains motivated to face challenges head-on.

Since joining Williams, Sainz achieved his best results by finishing eighth in both the Saudi Arabian and Emilia-Romagna Grands Prix. Currently ranked 15th in the drivers’ standings, he trails Albon by 33 points. Despite these challenges, Sainz remains determined to prove himself against elite competitors in Formula One.

Sainz continues to reflect on his journey and aspirations within Formula One. His experiences alongside renowned drivers fuel his ambition to excel further in the sport. While questions remain about Red Bull’s choice not to sign him for 2025, Sainz focuses on showcasing his skills and competitiveness on the track each race weekend.
