Carlos Alcaraz Dethrones Jannik Sinner, Ends Italian’s 65-Week Reign At Top After US Open Victory

After winning the US Open 2025, Carlos Alcaraz has taken back the top spot in the world rankings. In front of a crowded Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday, September 7, the Spaniard defeated Jannik Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in two hours and forty-two minutes.

After Novak Djokovic pulled out of the French Open 2024 quarterfinals due to a knee injury last year, Sinner shot to the top of the rankings. For 65 weeks, the Italian held the top spot until Alcaraz overtook him.

Alcaraz Reclaims Top Spot

This is Alcaraz’s first summit appearance since September 2023. He became the first teenager in history to hold the top spot in the world rankings when he defeated Casper Ruud in the US Open final in 2022.

“To my team and my family, I feel truly lucky to have you. Honestly, it’s an honour. The hard work you put in helps me improve not just as a player but also as a person. I’m really proud of the people I have around me, and every achievement I’ve had is because of you-this one belongs to you as well,” Alcaraz said in the on-court interview.

“I’m especially grateful to have part of my family here-my brother, uncle, father, and mother-with my little brothers watching from home. The support I receive from all of you means so much. Thank you,” Alcaraz added.

Alcaraz Beats Sinner

In New York, Alcaraz easily defeated Sinner, making what many had anticipated to be another classic a lopsided fight. In a sharp contrast to their two previous finals this year-the equally matched match at Wimbledon and the five-hour-and-29-minute battle at Roland Garros-the Spaniard outclassed and outpowered his opponent.

Alcaraz became one of the few players to have won Grand Slam titles on all three surfaces with this triumph, which also marked his second US Open title. Except the Australian Open, he currently holds two titles apiece at the French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open.

The loss was extremely terrible for Sinner. In addition to ending his 27-match winning streak in hard-court majors, it prevented him from becoming the first man to defend the US Open title since Roger Federer in 2008.
