KOTTAYAM: An elderly woman was killed after a speeding car lost control and rammed into five vehicles. The accident occurred near the Nanadom Market on the Poothotta Road in Vaikom around 11:30 a.m. on Thursday.
The deceased woman, identified as Chandrikadevi (72), wife of Vaikom Aarattukulangara native Krishnachari. She was travelling on a scooter along with her daughter Sajika.
Sajika and Vaikom Akkarappadam native OM Udhayappan (59) sustained injuries. Sajika, who sustained a serious leg injury, was first taken to the Vaikom Taluk Hospital and later shifted to the Kottayam Medical College.
Sajika and her mother were travelling from Vaikom to the Poothotta region when a car coming from the opposite direction lost control while overtaking another vehicle and crashed into the scooter. Both Sajika and her mother fell on the road under the impact of the crash. The car then swerved to the right side of the road and rammed into four scooters parked near a vegetable shop before getting stuck in a ditch. According to reports, the car belongs to a native of Kaliyammanada, Vaikom.
Udhayappan, a Block Panchayat member, sustained an injury on his right hand. Although the injured people were immediately rushed to the Vaikom Taluk Hospital by the locals, Chandrika’s life could not be saved. The body has been shifted to the Vaikom Taluk Hospital mortuary.
