Can ITR e-verify even after the deadline is over? Here is the answer

Taxpayers should keep in mind that it is not enough to file an ITR, to complete this process, they will also have to do e-verification of their ITR.

According to the data provided by the Income Tax (IT) Department, the total number of ITR filed by September 15, 2025 is 7,08,89,145. The data has also shown that 6,23,03,847 (about 6.23 crore) ITRs have been verified. This means that by September 15, 2025, about 86 lakh ITRs (7,08,89,145 minus 6,23,03,847 = 85,85,298) were filed but were not verified.

What is ITR e-verification?

Electronic Verification (e-verification) service taxpayers allows taxpayers to verify their income tax returns online. This process is important to complete the process of filing returns and it can be done using Aadhaar OTP, EVC or net banking.

If you do not do e-verification within 30 days

Your tax return will be considered incomplete, and such ITR returns filing will be considered invalid. According to questions asked on the e-verification available on the Income Tax Department’s website, where income tax returns are uploaded within the due date, but submitted 30 days after the e-verification or ITR-V is uploaded, in such cases, the date of submission of e-verification /ITR-V will be considered as the date of submission of income tax returns and all the results are applied to submit the date under the Act. It has also been clarified that where verification is not done after uploading income tax returns, such returns will be considered invalid.

According to the department’s website, if the ITR deposited within a 30 -day deadline will have to be filed for not being verified and the results of the delay filing, such as a late fee of Rs 5,000 under Section 234F (if the total income is not more than Rs 5 lakh, then limited to Rs 1,000). Additionally, if you have not verified the ITR filed before the 30 -day time limit and the deadline for filing ITR (31 July, 2024), you will not be able to choose the old tax system.

If ITR-V is deposited within 30 days of data transmission, what will be the date for submission of income tax return? Responding to this, the department says that if the income tax return is uploaded and the ITR-V is deposited within 30 days of uploading, then in such cases, the date of uploading income tax returns will be considered as the date of depositing income tax returns.

Duly verified ITR-V can be sent to the address of Centralized Processing Center, Income Tax Department, Bangalore-560500, Karnataka through the prescribed format and prescribed manner.
