Budget 2026: Will rail ticket prices increase? The government gave this big signal in the budget

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the country’s Union Budget for the 9th time. The Union Finance Minister made many announcements in his speech of about one and a half hour. He made many announcements ranging from health and education to infra. The government has increased and also reduced taxes on many things. Also announced were rail projects connecting the entire country by rail. But there is a figure in the budget data which indicates that perhaps the Railways may increase the train tickets in the coming days? Let us try to understand about it in detail.

Earlier the railway budget and general budget of the country were separate. But now it comes in one. Railways is considered the sister of the budget. This time too, along with Railways, about 47 percent of the total capex budget has been given to Infra. The government said in the budget that Railways has earned Rs 80 thousand crore from receipts received from passengers in the financial year 2025-26. At the same time, it is estimated to earn Rs 87 thousand crore in the current financial year. In such a situation, it is feared that the government may increase the price of railway tickets in the coming days. However, this is just a guess. Railways will take the final decision on whether ticket prices will increase or not. For example, whether the tickets of general bogie or sleeper will increase, it will be decided by the Railways only.

Rail corridors will be built

This time in the budget, the Finance Minister has made a big announcement regarding railway projects. 7 new high-speed rail corridors will be built in the country. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman gave this information on Sunday. He says that these rail corridors will make travel between different economic and cultural centers of the country easier. It has been said in the budget that many cities will be connected to each other through high-speed rail corridors. Its objective is to connect big cities with industrial areas and religious cities.

The 7 high-speed rail corridors announced in the budget include major cities and metros of the country. Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Varanasi and Siliguri will be connected through these corridors. According to the Finance Minister, these rail corridors will create better connectivity between the country’s financial centres, IT hubs and industrial areas.
