New Delhi: Telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), owned by the government, has announced the deployment of its Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) service nationwide that will provide Wi-Fi calling to its customers in all telecom circles in India. The action brings BSNL at par with other competitors, such as Airtel and Reliance Jio, who have been providing the feature over the years.
BSNL states that the service will help to enhance the quality and the coverage of the call, particularly in the regions with the poor or unreliable mobile network. Wi-Fi calling provides an opportunity to receive and make voice calls and messages via a Wi-Fi network, which can guarantee more comfortable communication within the building and in far-off places.

What BSNL’s VoWiFi service offers
Wi-Fi Calling, or VoWiFi, is a new service that is being offered to every BSNL subscriber countrywide. The rollout, according to the company, is part of its overall network modernisation. The service is quite handy, especially in the rural and remote areas, within houses, offices, and basement areas where mobile signals tend to fail.
VoWiFi takes place through the default dialler app and existing phone number of the user. There is no need to have third-party applications. The service is based on the IMS network and facilitates a perfect interconnection of Wi-Fi and mobile networks.
Free service with no extra charges
BSNL has assured that VoWiFi is provided at no cost and no extra fee is imposed on Wi-Fi-related calls. The company also says that the service helps to decongest its mobile network by handing over calls to Wi-Fi networks like BSNL Bharat Fibre and other broadband services.
Device support and how to enable it
Most recent smartphones support VoWiFi. The Wi-Fi Calling feature can be activated by the users through the phone settings menu. To check the compatibility of devices or support, the customers of BSNL are invited to attend their closest customer service centre or to call the BSNL helpline 1800-150-3.
Under this rollout, BSNL became the latest to enter the game of Wi-Fi calling, as Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea offered this feature in India, providing the user with an alternative reliable voice connection at no additional charge.
