BSF Air Wing First Female Flight Engineer: The BSF (Border Security Force) air wing has inducted the first woman flight engineer in its 50-year history. She is the lady flight engineer, Inspector Bhavana Choudhary, who has brought glory not only to BSF but to the entire country. BSF Director General Daljit Singh Chaudhary presented flying badges to Bhavana Chaudhary and four other male officers. With this honour, Bhavana’s name is forever recorded in the history of BSF.
How did Inspector Bhavna Chaudhary achieve this feat?
Inspector Bhavna Chaudhary achieved this feat on the basis of hard work and training. In the training which started in the month of August, he and four other officers completed two months of fast and intensive training. During this period he took 130 hours of practical flying and technical training. During these training, he not only got theory but also got experience of real situations. Especially during helicopter missions in flood relief operations in Punjab and other states, Bhavana and her colleagues understood the challenges and responsibilities of flying.

BSF has also started flight engineer training program
The BSF Air Wing had been facing shortage of flight engineers for the Mi-17 helicopter for a long time. Three officers of the first batch were trained by the Indian Air Force, but there were no training slots available in the Air Force for the second batch. For this reason, BSF started its own internal training program with the permission of the Home Ministry. Under this initiative, five officers, including Bhavana Chaudhary, have now become fully trained flight engineers.
BSF Air Wing has been contributing since 1969
The BSF Air Wing was given the responsibility of the aviation wing of the Ministry of Home Affairs in 1969. Since then this wing has been carrying out missions in difficult areas of the country. Reaching the deserts of Rajasthan, the snowy valleys of Kashmir, or the dense forests of the Northeast. The BSF Air Wing not only patrols the border areas but also plays an important role in important missions like disaster relief, medical evacuation and humanitarian assistance. Inspector Bhavna Chaudhary’s achievement is not only an example of women empowerment, but also shows that women are now contributing equally to border security.
