The central government has made major changes in the baggage rules in Budget 2026. The government on Sunday has taken a relief decision for the travelers coming to India from abroad. Now the limit for duty-free goods has been increased from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000. This will directly benefit people bringing goods to their homes from abroad.
According to the Baggage Rules, 2026, issued on Sunday, Indian citizens or foreign tourists coming to India by any other route other than land route like air or sea route can bring luggage up to Rs 75,000 without paying custom duty. This exemption will be available only if the passenger brings the luggage with him or in his personal bag.
When will the rules come into effect
The new Baggage Rules, 2026 will come into effect from midnight today i.e. 2nd February. These rules will replace the Baggage Rules, 2016 which have been in place for the last 10 years. The duty-free baggage limit for foreign tourists visiting India has also been increased to Rs 25,000. Earlier this limit was Rs 15,000.

Women passengers can bring with them jewelery weighing up to 40 grams without duty. At the same time, any person other than a male passenger or a woman can bring jewelery up to 20 grams without tax.
