Matthew Breetzke created history and set a new world record as he continued the remarkable start to his career in ODI cricket during South Africa’s massive 67-run victory over Australia in the first ODI of a three-match series between the two sides at the Kingsmead Stadium in Durban on Thursday (September 24).
Breetzke registered the second century of his career in ODI cricket with a fine knock of 112 runs off 106 balls, which included 14 boundaries and two sixes. Breetzke’s first ton came on his debut with a world record of 150 against New Zealand at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium in 2025.

Alongside his two centuries, Breetzke also has six half-centuries in ODI cricket so far in his career in 14 innings. He has made 822 runs at an average of 63.23 in the 50-over format for South Africa, which is the best start for a player in his career in history.
The 27-year-old has become the first player to score 800 ODI career runs in 14 innings. The record was previously held by Pakistan opener Imam-ul-Haq.

Meanwhile, Breetzke has equalled Navjot Singh Sidhu’s record for the most 50+ scores after playing 14 ODI innings. The Indian cricket star had also reached the milestone eight times in his career after playing as many innings, with 555 runs to his name (1987-88). However, he did not convert even a single one of those knocks into a century.
Moreover, Breetzke has now made a half-century in all three ODI innings he has played against Australia, after knocks of 57 and 88 at Cairns and Mackay last year. The only player to score at least a fifty in each of his first three ODIs against the six-time world champions was New Zealand’s John Wright (60, 57, 58 in 1980-81).
