Breaking: Legendary singer S. Janaki passes away

One of the greatest playback singers, S. Janaki, has breathed her last today. She was 88 at the time of her demise. The news was announced by her granddaughter, Apsara Vydyula, on Instagram. The family stated that the veteran singer passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones.

Fondly called the “Nightingale of South India,” Janaki was the recipient of four National Awards and 33 State Awards. She was born in April 1938 in Repalle, Andhra Pradesh. She married V. Ramprasad, who played a pivotal role in shaping her career.

Janaki commenced her playback singing career with the Tamil film Vidhiyin Vilayattu (1957) and went on to sing in six different languages within the same year.
