Brazil Ex President 27 Year Sentence: The Supreme Court of Brazil on Thursday convicted former President Jair Bolsonaro for conspiring to remain in power after losing 2022 elections. Four of the five-judge bench of the court found him guilty in five different crimes and sentenced him to 27 years 3 months. This is the first time in Brazil that a former President has been convicted for the coup.
Bolsonaro under house arrest
Bolsonaro is under house arrest in Brasilia and has denied these allegations. Bolsonaro has the right to appeal against this decision. The court will take 60 days to make its decision public. After that his lawyer will have to file an application for clarification within 5 days.
What did the court say while sentencing Bolsonaro?
While sentenced to Bolsonaro, Justice Carmen Lucia said that the evidence clearly shows that he made every effort to capture or maintain power. He was the kingpin of an organized gang. At the same time, Justice Alexander de Mores, who is monitoring the case, also said that Bolsonaro was the head of the coup and the head of the criminal organization. During the hearing, Mores showed several videos from 2021 to 2023, in which Bolsonaro was seen asking thousands of his supporters to abolish the Supreme Court. Apart from this, footage of sabotage at the headquarters of the Supreme Court on 8 January 2023 was also shown in the court.

Bolsonaro is constantly claiming his innocence
Bolsonaro was the first captain in the army and supported the military dictatorship that lasted from 1964 to 1985, killing hundreds of Brazilians. Now after being convicted, many right -wing leaders like Marine Le Penn of France and Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines have criticized the decision. 70 -year -old Bolsonaro is constantly claiming his innocence. He says that he is a victim of political harassment and the ongoing case against him is just a conspiracy.
