Kurukshetra Brahma Sarovar: The International Geeta Mahotsav, which started in Kurukshetra, Haryana on 15 November, will end on 5 December. According to mythological belief, Lord Brahma created the universe by performing a huge yajna at this place, hence it is known as Brahma Sarovar. This is the largest man-made reservoir in Asia, which is 45 feet deep. There are concrete ghats built around Brahma Sarovar, which are named after the characters of Mahabharata like Arjun Ghat and Bhim Ghat etc. Every year on Geeta Jayanti, Deepdaan is organized here, in which thousands of lamps are lit and released into its sacred waters.

Relation to Mahabharata period

According to mythology, according to religious beliefs, Brahma Sarovar is the same place where before the war of Mahabharata, Lord Shri Krishna gave the divine sermon of Srimad Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna and showed him the path to the destruction of Kauravas. It is said that Draupadi also washed her hair in this same lake. According to the stories related to Mahabharata, Duryodhana tried to hide in it at the end of the Mahabharata war. After the victory in the Mahabharata war, Yudhishthir had built a pillar in the middle of the lake. Apart from this, this lake is also related to Parashuram, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Why did Arjun show the way to destroy the Kauravas?

On the battlefield of Kurukshetra, Lord Shri Krishna, standing on the banks of Brahma Sarovar, showed Arjun the way to destroy the Kauravas by preaching the Bhagavad Gita, when Arjun was hesitant in fighting after seeing his family and gurus. Through this sermon, Shri Krishna explained Arjuna about karma and dharma, so that he could follow his Kshatriya religion and fight against the Kauravas.
