After missing out on the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final and not playing the summit clash for the first time, the Indian team made a positive start to their hopes of reaching the final in 2027 after playing out a 2-2 draw against England in the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy (ATT) in what was arguably the Shubman Gill-led side’s toughest challenge in the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
India is currently third in the table and has five series, including all three at home, remaining. The team will play 13 matches in this cycle, out of which nine are home and four away. The two-time runners-up will only play two matches outside Asia.
India will play their first home series against the West Indies in October before South Africa visits the country in November. In 2026, India will only play four Tests, which are part of the WTC, and all of them are away from home against Sri Lanka and New Zealand.
India’s final assignment of the ongoing WTC cycle will be the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, as the Asian Giants will host Australia for a marquee five-match series.
India’s Remaining 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) Matches
Opponent | Matches | Host Country | Dates |
West Indies | 2 | India | October 2025 |
South Africa | 2 | India | November 2025 |
Sri Lanka | 2 | Sri Lanka | August 2026 |
New Zealand | 2 | New Zealand | September 2026 |
Australia | 5 | Inida | February, March 2027 |
India is also scheduled to play a one-off Test against Afghanistan in June 2026 at home, but that will not part of the WTC campaign as the opponents are not part of the nine teams competing in the tournament.
Ahead of the new cycle, the Indian team saw wholesale changes as Ravichadnran Ashwin, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma retired from the spot post the end of the last cycle. Ahead of the England tour, which was India’s first outing in the 2025-27, Gill was named Indian captain.
