Border 2 review and release live updates: Sunny Deol film arrives in t

Viewers shared that the credits for Border 2 feature Sunny Deol’s name as ‘Dharmendra ji ka beta (Dharmendra’s son)’.

“Border 2’s trailer and teaser are nowhere near as good as Varun Dhawan’s performance in the film. His acting is excellent, the emotions are superb,” tweeted one viewer.

Viewers shared that the credits for Border 2 feature Sunny Deol’s name as ‘Dharmendra ji ka beta (Dharmendra’s son)’. The veteran actor passed away in November, and Border 2 is Sunny’s first release since his father’s death. Fans said the revelation was an emotional moment.

Suniel Shetty offered prayers at Shree Mahakaleshwar Temple in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain on Wednesday ahead of the film’s release. He prayed for the well-being of his family members and for the success of Border 2, featuring son Ahan Shetty. “Today, I offered prayers at Mahakal temple and prayed for the well-being of the family. Along with this, a Border 2 film is going to be released which is based on soldiers, so I wished for the success of the film. My son also acted in the film, so I sought the blessings of Lord Mahakal for its success,” the actor told reporters.

Anu Malik’s iconic songs from Border have been recreated in the sequel. Speaking to ANI, the composer said, “The song is being recreated today, and it will be done tomorrow as well. Border is incomplete without Sunny Deol and Sandese Aate Hai. The people who have recreated the song, I would like to congratulate and wish them all the best. The recreated version should receive the same amount of love from the people. I want to wish Nidhi Dutta and JP sir all the best, and also the music composer and the lyricists, who are recreating it. I want people to embrace it wholeheartedly.”

Rashid Khan, Afghanistan cricketer, took to social media to express his desire to watch Border 2. In a clip he posted on Instagram, Rashid roasts corn over a coal fire on the roadside. He added the Border 2 song Ghar Kab Aaoge as background music. Sharing the clip, he wrote, “Border 2 toh mein zaroor dekhunga (I will surely watch Border 2).”

After a delay in content delivery to theatres led to many morning shows of the Sunny Deol-starrer being cancelled, several viewers took to X to air their greivances. One tweeted, “@IndiaCinepolis @district_india what the hell with district app i have booked 2 tickets of border 2 .. 9am show now .. they are saying there is no such show at 9 am . What is this behaviour?? Dlf mall saket.”

Like Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar, Border 2 will not release in the Gulf countries, owing to its ‘anti-Pakistan’ slant. A Bollywood Hungama report stated, “Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE will not be releasing Border 2. By now, it’s a given that films perceived as having ‘anti-Pakistan’ content don’t get a release in this belt.”

Suniel Shetty starred in the original Border, where his character’s death became an iconic scene. Talking about the sequel at an event this week, he said, “When I got my death sequence, I was very happy. When you die for the country, it feels good. But for the first time I felt that if I was alive in Border, then I would have become part of Border 2. I always had this itch to wear the uniform.”

Lyricist Javed Akhtar took a dim view of his songs from Border being remade in Border 2. Speaking to India Today, he said: “They did ask me to write for the film, but I refused. I really feel this is a kind of intellectual and creative bankruptcy. You have an old song, which did well, and you want to put it out again by adding something? Make new songs or else accept that you cannot do the same level of work.”

At a promotional event ahead of the film’s release, Varun Dhawan addressed the trolling he faced for his performance. “I believe that you shut down the noise and just let your work do the talking. Yeh sab cheezein chalti rehti hain (All these things keep happening). It doesn’t really matter. Main iske liye kaam nahin karta hoon. Main jis cheez ke liye kaam karta hoon woh iss Friday ko pata chalega (I don’t work for this. What I work for, you will find out this Friday),” he said.

Speaking to ANI, Border 2 actor Paramvir Singh Cheema shared, “When I heard the name Border, I obviously liked it as it’s a big film. But I also had a doubt that I might get lost amid all the big stars. When you think about your journey, you think about how to move forward. Also, there’s a lot of type casting. I wore a turban in Tabber and Black Warrant. So I didn’t want people to see me in only turban roles where there’s a lot more.”

The CBFC cleared Border 2 with no dialogue or action cuts, but asked to make certain modifications, including changing visuals of India’s flag, adding the real name of a soldier on whom Sunny’s character is based. Read the full report here

The box office prediction for Border 2 is looking positive with trade pundits estimating the film to open at around ₹32-35 crore. Some optimistic estimates even put the figure at ₹40 crore. In either case, the film will beat the first day collections of recent blockbusters like Dhurandhar and Chhaava.

The morning shows of the film are likely to be cancelled in many parts of the country, according to a Film Information report. It states that since the content is not ready, distributors like UFO Moviez have informed theatres that early shows of 8 am and 9 am may not be possible.

Border 2 ended its pre-sales with day 1 advance booking gross of ₹12.5 crore, selling 4 lakh tickets in the process. This helped the film beat Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar, which earned ₹9 crore in advance booking last month.

Film critic and trade expert Taran Adarsh shared Border 2 review on his social media on early Friday morning, giving the film 4.5 stars and calling it outstanding. He reserved special praise for Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, along with the score and dialogues. Read his full review here.
