Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming film, Queen Forever, has landed in legal trouble after the Bombay High Court refused to grant an interim injunction against the Jiostar India Pvt. Ltd, the production and the release of the film. A single-judge bench of Justice Sandeep Marne has declined the relief to Phantom Studios India Pvt Ltd, co-producer of Kangana Ranaut’s hit film Queen (2014), and claimed that the film was a critically acclaimed and commercial success, which has acquired substantial goodwill. Queen Forever was a purported sequel, which is being produced by the production house JioStar, who was originally the co-producer of Kangana’s Queen.
HC’s order against Queen Forever makers
According to Bar and Bench, the suit filed by Phantom Studios states that they and Jiostar were joint and equal owners of all the intellectual property rights in . As per the agreement, they have expressly and unambiguously provided the derivative rights in the film, including the right to create sequels, prequels, remakes or any other work based on the film or its characters, story or other elements – vested jointly and equally in both the parties.
Phantom Studios mentioned the plea that it had not given any consent for any sequels, adaptations or derivative works on the film. The production house had also issued several caution notices to Jiostar since April 2026 to cease and desist from proceeding with purported plans for making a sequel or any other content associated with Queen. Despite notices, Jiostar refused to disclose any details of the project, claims Phantom Studios.
In the interim application by the HC, Phantom sought an order temporarily barring the defendants from making, releasing or promoting any sequel or adaptation of the film without Phantom’s written consent until the suit is finally decided.
On the other hand, Jiostar has denied the allegations levelled by the Studios and mentioned that a new film is not a continuation of the original film. They claimed that the Phantom had been aware of the project since April 2025 and had already engaged in correspondence with Jiostar. The production house also pointed out that the film is expected to release later this year.
After hearing both sides’ arguments, the Bombay HC declined to grant any interim injunction.
