Bomb threat at Bombay Stock Exchange traced to hoax email from ‘Comrade Pinarayi Vijayan’

Mumbai: The Bombay Stock Exchange received a bomb threat via email on Tuesday (July 15 ), claiming that “four RDX IED bombs” had been planted in the tower, due to detonate at 3 pm. According to reports, the message was sent from an ID purporting to be “Comrade Pinarayi Vijayan”.

Prompt police response

BSE officials alerted Mumbai Police, prompting a full-scale operation by the bomb disposal squad, sniffer dogs and local officers. The building was thoroughly searched, and no suspicious devices were discovered. Meanwhile, operations at the exchange continued without interruption, according to reports.

Case filed, probe is on

Authorities filed a case against an unknown person at the Mata Ramabai Ambedkar Marg Police Station under sections 351(1)(b), 353(2), 351(3) and 351(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Cybercrime units and the Mumbai Police are working together to trace the email’s origin and motive.

Worrying pattern of hoax bomb threats

The BSE incident forms part of a broader wave of bomb threats across India. On Monday (July 14), the Golden Temple in Amritsar received a similar email warning, prompting police action. On the same day, bomb threats targeted at least three Delhi schools in Prashant Vihar, Dwarka Sector 16, and Chanakyapuri triggered evacuations and investigations by Delhi Police.

Public safety remains paramount: Authorities

Although the threats proved to be hoaxes, the authorities said that they treat the threats seriously to ensure public safety. Mumbai Police authorities further emphasised that such incidents will not be tolerated, and any individual involved in sending false threats faces potential action.
