How did Mumtaz start her career?
She started her career as a child actress in Sone Ki Chidiya in 1958 and acted as an extra in Vallah Kya Baat Hai, Stree and Sehra in the early 1960s. She landed her first role as an adult in O. P. Ralhan’s Gehra Daag and later worked in some supporting roles. She was the main lead in 16 action films and was labelled as a stunt-film heroine.
Her breakthrough role came in 1967 with the film ‘Ram Aur Shyam’ with Dilip Kumar. Her big success came with Raj Khosla’s blockbuster family drama Do Raaste, released in 1969, and it made her a star. Her pairing with Rajesh Khanna was the most successful, with a total of 10 films.
Her popular work includes Bandhan, Aadmi Aur Insaan, Sachaa Jhutha, Khilona, Tere Mere Sapne, Prem Kahani, Aap Ki Kasam, Roti, Chor Machaye Shor, Apna Desh, Loafer, Jheel Ke Us Paar, among others.
Why did Mumtaz leave acting?
Mumtaz’s family approved her relationship with Gujarati businessman Mayur Madhvani, and she left action after getting married. Speaking to Vickey Lalwani, she said, “I didn’t have a choice. My mother, grandmother, and aunt had approved the proposal. They knew the family and suggested I quit acting and settle down.”
The actress was reportedly in a relationship with Shammi Kapoor and even got engaged. The Kapoor family reportedly wanted her to leave acting after marriage, hence Mumtaz walked away from the relationship. However, with Mayur Madhvani, she made a different choice.
