How did Mumtaz start her career?

She started her career as a child actress in Sone Ki Chidiya in 1958 and acted as an extra in Vallah Kya Baat Hai, Stree and Sehra in the early 1960s. She landed her first role as an adult in O. P. Ralhan’s Gehra Daag and later worked in some supporting roles. She was the main lead in 16 action films and was labelled as a stunt-film heroine.

Her breakthrough role came in 1967 with the film ‘Ram Aur Shyam’ with Dilip Kumar. Her big success came with Raj Khosla’s blockbuster family drama Do Raaste, released in 1969, and it made her a star. Her pairing with Rajesh Khanna was the most successful, with a total of 10 films.
