A growing sense of hesitation appears to be emerging among some Bollywood actresses when it comes to signing Telugu films.
While South cinema has traditionally attracted Hindi film stars with its scale and commercial reach, concerns over the way female characters are written seem to be influencing some actresses’ choices.
Janhvi Kapoor, for instance, is reportedly said to have responded with a “not interested” when approached for another Telugu project.
Her decision has added to the perception that some Bollywood heroines are becoming cautious about working in Telugu cinema.
It is also worth noting that Janhvi did not tweet about Peddi even after its release, despite the considerable attention surrounding the film.
Rasha Thadani’s Telugu debut, Srinivasa Mangapuram, also failed to make the expected impact, and she reportedly returned to Mumbai following the film’s disappointing performance.
Her experience has further fuelled discussions about the challenges Bollywood actresses face when entering the Telugu film industry.
The larger concern among some actresses is job satisfaction. They feel that South filmmakers often either underwrite female characters or primarily use heroines as glamour elements, giving them limited depth and little scope to leave a lasting impact.
For actresses looking for strong, performance-oriented roles, meaningful characterisation is becoming increasingly important.
If Telugu filmmakers want to attract more Bollywood talent, giving heroines substantial and well-developed characters could play a key role.
