New Delhi: BMW has launched the updated second-generation 2 Series Gran Coupé in India, starting at ₹46.90 lakh (ex-showroom). Locally assembled at BMW’s Chennai plant, the new 2 Series is now available only in petrol variants: the 218i M Sport and the slightly more premium 218i M Sport Pro, which goes for ₹48.90 lakh.
The updated compact sedan brings some major cosmetic tweaks, segment-first tech upgrades, and an engine-retuning story for those who love spirited driving. Here’s a breakdown for auto enthusiasts looking beyond the badge and brochure.
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé: Updated design, sharper look
BMW’s design team gave this entry-level coupé a big attitude update. The front now gets a more aggressive shark-nose style and a larger kidney grille. The grille lights up with the new “Iconic Glow” feature in the M Sport Pro trim, especially noticeable at night. The new headlamps are adaptive LEDs with cornering and matrix high-beam tech, while the wide bumper and blacked-out air intakes push the sporty envelope further.
Size-wise, this Gran Coupé is 4546mm long, 1800mm wide, and 1445mm tall, longer and taller than before, with a wheelbase of 2670mm. Frameless doors and a sloping roof keep the fastback look intact, with subtle M badges and dark chrome details reminding you it’s no ordinary compact.
Familiar motor, now with a Boost Button
Under the hood, the 218i still gets the same 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine making 156hp and 230Nm of torque. But here’s the kicker: the new “Sport Boost” function lets you summon peak acceleration with just a flick of the left paddle shifter. The car clocks 0–100 km/h in 8.6 seconds and hits a top speed of 230 km/h.
Mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, gearshifts feel quicker in sport mode. BMW claims the reworked suspension setup offers better ride comfort and less body roll, especially around corners and on rougher patches, a welcome change for Indian roads.
Tech Inside the new 2 Series: Segment-first features
Inside, things feel premium and surprisingly tech-loaded for the segment. There’s a new curved widescreen display that merges a 10.25-inch instrument panel with a 10.7-inch infotainment screen. Both trims now run BMW’s latest Operating System 9 with QuickSelect for faster touch-based controls. No rotary knob here, it’s all touch or voice now.
The M Sport Pro variant adds a head-up display with augmented view, live navigation overlays, and a Harman Kardon audio system with 12 speakers. Other niceties include wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and ambient lighting that changes with drive modes.
Seats are finished in leather-free Veganza upholstery, available in Mocha or Oyster, with improved under-thigh support. And yes, the panoramic sunroof comes standard.
Safety and driver assistance
BMW didn’t hold back on safety. The car includes six airbags, cornering brake control, DSC, ABS with brake assist, ISOFIX mounts, tyre pressure monitoring, and even a crash sensor.
Parking is easier now with features like Parking Assistant Plus, Reversing Assistant (which memorizes your last 50 metres of movement), surround view camera, and auto braking for rear collisions. Blind spot monitoring and lane change warnings are included under the BMW Driving Assistant umbrella.
