Popular folk singer Maithili Thakur has joined BJP. She will be a candidate from Alinagar seat in Bihar Assembly elections 2025. Maithili, who has crores of followers on social media, has been chosen by the party to attract young voters.
Patna: Bihar Assembly elections 2025 will now see a fusion of politics and entertainment. Folk singer Maithili Thakur, who has made a place in the hearts of crores of people on social media, is now ready to contest the elections. On Tuesday evening, he took membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and his name was declared as the candidate from Alinagar seat in the BJP’s second list released on Wednesday.
Social media star turned election candidate
25 year old Maithili Thakur is very popular on social media. She has been a well-known personality on social media for almost five years. He has more than 5 million subscribers on YouTube and 6.4 million followers on Instagram. He, along with his brothers, has earned recognition in the country and the NRI community by presenting traditional and folk songs, bhajans, Bhojpuri and Maithili language music.
His popularity is not limited to online only. Maithili has proved her talent at the national and international level through stage, TV and online shows. His songs and performances have earned him immense love among the young and cultural audience. Many times Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also present in his programs. Bhojpuri and Maithili languages prominently feature in his folk songs and hymns.
From Madhubani to Delhi and then to Bihar politics
Maithili Thakur is originally from Madhubani district, but she studied in Delhi. Her father Ramesh Thakur himself is a musician and the family environment kept Maithili connected to the world of music since childhood. Maithili started learning music under the guidance of her grandfather at the age of just four years.
He practiced various musical instruments like tabla, harmonium etc. from an early age and gained popularity through jugalbandi with his brothers. Along with this, he also obtained a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Delhi University, due to which he has an understanding of society and political issues.
BJP’s election focus as a young and influential face
BJP fielded Maithili Thakur as its candidate from Alinagar considering her young and influential social media followers. The party believes that this step will help in women empowerment and connecting with young voters. Alinagar seat is socially diverse. There are voters from Brahmins, Muslims, and other castes. Maithili’s candidature can create a new equation on this seat and the party can get a political edge as a youth and cultural face.
