Bizarre U-turn! Umpire says not out to Jasprit Bumrah’s appeal, then suddenly raises finger to dismiss Mitchell Owen

In one of the most dramatic and strangest moments, Jasprit Bumrah’s delivery to Mitchell Owen turned into one of the bizarre dismissals during the second T20I between India and Australia on Friday (October 31).

The drama unfolded on the fourth delivery of the 18th over of Australia’s successful chase, as Jasprit Bumrah bowled a clever slower off-cutter to Mitchell Owen, who tried to create space and drive but only managed a faint edge through to the Indian wicketkeeper Sanju Samson.

Jasprit Bumrah’s off-cutter and the umpire’s flip create a viral moment at the MCG

Both Jasprit Bumrah and Samson instantly appealed with full confidence, but the umpire initially turned them down by nodding his head. However, just as Bumrah signaled for a review, the umpire Wayne Knights suddenly changed his mind and raised his finger.

Owen, who was still unsure, opted for a review, but the UltraEdge confirmed the spike, proving India’s ace pacer right once again.

As Owen walked back for 14 off 10 balls, Bumrah celebrated with his trademark calmness, but the bizarre U-turn from the umpire went viral online.

India suffer second-biggest T20I defeat at the MCG

Indian bowlers stepped up after the damage was done by Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh, but it was a batting collapse that sealed their fate at the MCG.

Well, Australia recorded a dominant four-wicket victory over India, sealing the game with 40 balls remaining in the second T20I at the MCG.

It was India’s second biggest defeat in T20Is in terms of balls to spare. Their biggest defeat in the format remains the 2008 loss to the same side and same venue when 52 balls were left.

Australia thrash India to go 1-0 up in T20I series

Despite a fighting performance from Abhishek Sharma (68 runs off 37 balls), India never truly looked in control after setting a modest total of 125 runs at the MCG. The Australian openers Travis Head (28) and Mitchell Marsh (46) launched a fierce attack right from the powerplay against India.

Marsh’s aggressive strokes completely shifted the momentum, while Josh Inglis contributed 20 runs off 20 balls. For India, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy each scalped two wickets against Australia at the MCG.

With this win, the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the ongoing five-match T20I series against India after the first game was washed out in Canberra on October 29.

Suryakumar Yadav hails Abhishek Sharma and Josh Hazlewood

After the loss, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav gave credit to Josh Hazlewood for his stunning efforts with the ball. Hazlewood was named Player of the Match for his match-defining spell of 3/13 in 4 overs against India. The actions will now move to Hobart, where the third T20I will be played on November 2.

Suryakumar said at the post-match presentation, “The way he bowled in the powerplay, if you’re four down in the powerplay, it’s difficult to recover from that. Well bowled to him. Abhishek has been doing this for quite some time now. He knows his game and his identity, and he is not changing it anymore, and hopefully he sticks to it and plays many more knocks like this for us. I think we need to do what we did in the first game. Bat well when batting first and then come out and defend.”
