New Delhi: A disturbing video has surfaced on social media showing a group of men groping a woman and parading her on a street in public in Bihar’s Nalanda district. Two people were arrested for allegedly molesting the woman, police said on Tuesday.
In the purported video clip, which has gone viral on social media, a mob can be seen molesting the woman in full public view and dragging her on the street. The viral clip also showed a man holding the woman by her neck, and some people recording the incident. The incident took place in Noor Sarai area of Bihar a few days ago, according to police.
Molested on suspicion of affair
The woman, the mother of three, was allegedly sexually harassed over suspicion of having an extramarital affair. She alleged that some men spotted her with a mobile repair technician when she had gone to get her mobile recharged and suspected that they were having an affair. Later, the crowd harassed her and dragged her through the street. She also alleged that some villagers even tried to forcibly put sindoor on her forehead.
The woman’s husband works as a daily wage worker in Pune and she lives with her mother-in-law and three children. Upon learning about the incident, he rushed back to Nalanda.
2 arrested; Opposition attacks Nitish govt
On March 26, the woman lodged a complaint alleging harassment and sexual assault. Based on her complaint, two of the accused —Ashok Yadav and Matlu Mahto, both residents of Ajaypur village — were arrested. Police said that efforts are underway to identify and nab the other accused seen in the video.
The widely-circulated video clip sparked outrage in the state, with Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav condemning the “shameful incident in the home district of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar”.
“It was a gang rape attempt. Those who misbehaved with the woman tore off her clothes. The incident presents a scary picture of the collapsed law and order in Bihar,” the RJD working president said.
