Uranium was found in the milk of lactating women in many districts of Bihar. There are signs of non-carcinogenic health risk in 70% of children, but overall levels are below the limit and doctors have advised to continue breastfeeding.
Patna/New Delhi. A recent study has revealed dangerous levels of uranium (U238) in the breast milk of lactating mothers in many districts of Bihar, which has raised serious concerns about the health of their children. Researchers at several institutions have found that exposure to uranium through breast milk can pose significant non-carcinogenic health risks to children.
Analysis of breast milk of 40 lactating mothers
Dr. Ashok Sharma of AIIMS Delhi is the co-author of this study. He said, “In the study, the breast milk of 40 lactating mothers was analyzed and uranium (U-238) was found in all the samples. Although 70% of the children showed non-carcinogenic health risks, the total uranium level was below the prescribed limit and it is expected that it will have very little impact on the health of both mothers and children.
Highest individual value in Khagaria of Bihar
The highest average contamination was found in Khagaria district, while the highest individual value was found in Katihar district. “Although uranium exposure may have risks such as impaired neurological development and decreased IQ, breast-feeding should not be discontinued and is the most beneficial source of nutrition for children unless clinically indicated.”
