Stones were pelted at HAM candidate Jyoti Devi during campaigning in Gaya’s Barachatti seat. He was admitted to the hospital after being injured in this attack. Police have started searching for the attackers and are investigating the matter.
Amidst Bihar Assembly elections 2025, tension spread in Barachatti Assembly seat of Gaya district on Tuesday when Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) candidate and former Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi’s supporter and current MLA Jyoti Devi was attacked with stones while campaigning in an open jeep. She was injured in this attack and was immediately admitted to the local hospital.
Anti-social elements entered the crowd and started throwing stones.
The incident took place in Sulebatta area when Jyoti Devi was holding a public relations rally with her supporters. According to eyewitnesses, the rally was moving forward when some people hidden in the crowd suddenly started throwing stones towards the jeep. A stone directly hit Jyoti Devi, after which the campaign was stopped and she was taken to the hospital. According to doctors, his condition is currently stable.
Police in alert mode, investigation intensified
As soon as information about the attack was received, police reached the spot and several teams were deployed in the area. CCTV footage, video recording and statements of local people are being taken. Police have said that identification and arrest of the attackers is a priority. After this incident, there has been a strong boil in local politics. Because earlier this week also there was a similar fatal attack on another candidate of ours in Tekari, Gayaji.
The competition in Barachatti is not only political but also of prestige.
The Barachatti seat is already considered high-profile as it is one of the six seats that HAM got in the NDA seat-sharing deal, and is being carried by Jitan Ram Manjhi as the family candidate. Jyoti Devi is considered a strong face of the Manjhi family in this area. Anger and tension are clearly visible among the supporters after the attack. The administration has deployed additional police forces in the area so that the situation remains under control.
