New Delhi: Bigg Boss 19 kicked off on August 24 with Salman Khan returning as host for another dramatic season. Among the celebrity contestants, singer-composer Amaal Mallik made headlines during the premiere when he revealed details about his health and personal journey.
On stage, Amaal admitted that he has been battling clinical depression and also suffers from sleep apnea, a condition where breathing repeatedly pauses during sleep. The disorder, which can lower oxygen levels in the body, requires him to use a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine. The device helps maintain airflow through a mask, preventing breathing interruptions. In one of the initial episodes, Amaal was even spotted resting with the machine strapped on, drawing concern as well as support from fans.

Speaking directly to Salman Khan during the premiere, Amaal credited the superstar for playing a pivotal role in his career. He expressed, “Thanks to you. The songs are working, and that’s a blessing. But you were the one who gave me that start 10 years ago. Today, I’m about to do something different, and once again, you’re part of it. You’re lucky for me.”
The 33-year-old composer further opened up about the challenges of living with his sleep disorder, adding, “I’ve a sleeping disorder so people might have to deal with my snoring problems.” He also reflected on the pressures of early fame, saying, “I think that happened because I found success a bit too early. When you get that kind of success at 24, suddenly… I think I’ve mellowed down with age, slowed my pace a bit.”
Explaining why he chose to enter Bigg Boss 19, Amaal revealed that he wanted to show viewers a different side of himself. “So I thought, why not use this show to connect with all the people who’ve shown me love for the past 10 years? They know the music, but maybe not the person behind it. I want them to meet the real Amaal, not the one whose words or tweets accidentally turned into headlines.”
