Bigg Boss 19 began on August 24, with Salman Khan returning as the host for the show. One of the contestants, singer Amaal Mallik, made several revelations at the beginning of the show itself.
He opened up about his medical conditions, that he was clinically depressed and has been suffering from a condition called sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. This can reduce the oxygen levels in the body. In a recent Instagram post, Dr. Meghali Diwaker, BDS and MDS (Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery) reviewed the footage from the show and said that, “some people have a condition called obstructive sleep apnea in which the throat muscles get too relaxed while they are asleep. This blocks the airway and the person suffering through this literally stops breathing for a few seconds. This can also happen dozens of times every night. It looks weird but the mask is keeping him alive while he sleeps through the night.”
Looking at the machine Amaal was using in the show, she added “for this, the device is used which is called a CPAP machine. It blows a gentle stream of air that keeps the airway open so the person can breathe freely and sleep safely. If this condition is not treated properly, it can cause extreme tiredness, high BP, heart problems and even increase the risk of stroke. And the interesting thing is that most people don’t even know they have it.”
Talking about sleep apnea, Amaal shared that “I have a sleeping disorder so people might have to deal with my snoring problems.” He further added, “I think that happened because I found success a bit too early.”
