It has been more than two years since the announcement of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to be removed from the trend of 2000 rupee notes, but surprisingly, crores of rupees notes have not come back to the people.
The latest figures of RBI show that by 31 July 2025, more than 3 crore notes of 2000 rupees i.e. about 6017 crore rupees are still in circulation.
Are 2000 rupee notes still valid? Yes, RBI has made it clear that 2000 rupee notes are still legal tenders, that is, they are still considered a valid currency. Meaning if you have these notes, then they are completely valid – only you have to bring them into the banking system correctly.
Where did the number of these notes reached? On May 19, 2023, when the RBI announced the closure of 2000 rupee notes, the total value of such notes was around Rs 3.56 lakh crore. But now 98.31% notes have returned and only 1.69% notes i.e. 6017 crore are left.
2000 rupee notes can still change! If you still have 2000 rupee notes, there is no need to panic. RBI has kept many options open for this: -RBI’s 19 regional offices are still accepting 2000 notes. -By going to these offices, you can deposit these notes in your bank account. -If you live far and wide, you can send notes through the post office and submit them to RBI offices.
