The hassle of paying house tax and water bill separately for decades is now going to end. The integrated tax system will be implemented in the city from December, which will make the tax payment process more simple, transparent and convenient for consumers.
The hassle of keeping separate bills for house tax and water tax is about to end. The tax collection system in the city was divided into two parts for years, due to which lakhs of consumers had to suffer every year. But now a system is going to be implemented from December, which will not only simplify the process but will also make tax payment completely transparent and easy.
Now house tax and water tax will come in one bill, new system will start from December
There is news of great relief for lakhs of building owners of Lucknow. From the month of December, Municipal Corporation and Water Department are going to issue joint bill of House Tax and Water Tax. This arrangement is being finalized after the implementation of the new integrated software designed by the National Informatics Center (NIC).
Five and a half lakh water tax consumers and seven and a half lakh house tax consumers will directly benefit from this change. Now they will not have to face the trouble of going to the offices of different departments to deposit bills, get records corrected or get names transferred.

Actual implementation of merger after 15 years
About 15 years ago, the Jal Sansthan was merged with the Municipal Corporation. After this, the name of Jal Sansthan was changed to Jalkal Department, but both the departments continued to function separately. The Water Department continued to function with its own independent billing system, budget and collection system, while the responsibility of house tax continued to be handled by the Municipal Corporation.
Due to this dual system, consumers had to visit two offices and even basic processes became complicated. Although several attempts were made to integrate the two bills, it could never be implemented on the ground.
After the new order issued by the government about six months ago, this direction gained momentum and now preparations are on to implement it completely from December.
How was the joint software prepared?
Water Works General Manager Kuldeep Singh said that the Water Works Department collects water tax and sewer tax from about 5.5 lakh buildings, while the Municipal Corporation collects house tax from 7.5 lakh buildings. NIC has created a software by combining the records of both the departments which:
- The consumer will get a unique ID
- Joint bill will be issued on the same basis
- Water will not be taken if there is no water/sewer line within 100 meters radius.
- House tax will be applicable on all buildings, except in border extension areas.
The security audit of the software is ongoing and it is expected that it will be implemented in December once the trials are completed.
What benefits will consumers get?
- House tax and water tax in one bill
- No need to go to two departments
- Process of record correction, mutation and payment simplified
- Less chances of errors in transparent system
- Easy online payment and tracking
This system, which is going to start from December, is considered to be a major change in the city administration system of Lucknow.
