‘Big takeoff’ in aviation sector! Former British Airways boss William Walsh will take over IndiGo’s flight

The country’s largest airline IndiGo on Tuesday announced the appointment of former British Airways chief William Walsh as the new CEO. Walsh, a veteran of the airline industry, is currently the Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Announcing Walsh’s appointment as CEO—subject to regulatory approval—IndiGo said in a press release that his tenure at IATA ends on July 31 and he is expected to take charge on or before August 3. This announcement has been made less than three weeks after the sudden resignation of IndiGo CEO Peter Elbers.

Walsh, commonly known as ‘Willie’, was previously CEO of British Airways and IAG (International Airlines Group—a holding company that includes airlines such as Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, Level and Vueling). Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director, IndiGo, said, “As we enter a new phase of change and growth, I am delighted to welcome Willy to IndiGo.

He further said that he is a well-known and highly capable leader of the aviation industry. He brings a rare combination of global perspective, operational expertise to build customer-centric airlines, deep industry experience and values-based leadership qualities—making him the best fit to lead IndiGo at this critical juncture of its growth.
