Under the MCAD program in Uttar Pradesh, 4 pilot projects of PPIN based micro irrigation are being built in Gorakhpur and Sant Kabir Nagar. This will increase water use efficiency by 75% and farmers will get multi-cropping benefits.
Lucknow. As per the vision of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department is making continuous efforts for the complete development of irrigation potential in the state and increasing water use efficiency. In this sequence, the department is promoting micro irrigation in Purvanchal region under the Multi Cluster Agriculture Development (MCAD) program.
Micro irrigation pilot project in Gorakhpur and Sant Kabir Nagar
UP Irrigation Department is constructing a pilot project of micro irrigation in total 4 clusters on Rapti and Kuwano rivers in Gorakhpur and Sant Kabir Nagar. These projects are based on PPIN (Pressurized Pipe Irrigation Network) technology, which will ensure better utilization of water resources in Purvanchal.
These projects will benefit paddy cultivation as well as Rabi and Kharif crops in the area. Besides, this initiative will also strengthen the campaign of sustainable agricultural development of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
4 cluster projects being built on Rapti and Kuwano rivers
Under the MCAD programme, the following four clusters are being developed in Gorakhpur and Sant Kabir Nagar-
- in Gorakhpur district
- Bansgaon-Malwa Cluster: Based on pond and Rapti river in Kaudiram area
- Bargarhwa Cluster: On Rapti River in Khorabar area, 161.33 CCA capacity
- Jungle Kauria-I Cluster: In Brahmapur area, 157.11 CCA capacity
in Sant Kabir Nagar district
- Rajdhani/Prajapatipur Cluster: On Kuwano River in Hansarbazar area, 264.62 CCA capacity.
Integrated Irrigation Network using PPIN technology
Ponds, rivers and other water sources are being integrated through Pressurized Piped Irrigation Network (PPIN) in all these clusters. This will promote micro irrigation and the water use efficiency of the system has been determined at 0.35 LPS per hectare.
Water user society will provide management at local level
Water User Society (WUS) will be formed in each cluster. These committees will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the irrigation network. This will increase participation of farmers and ensure ownership and accountability at the local level.
PPIN technology will increase water use efficiency by 75 percent
PPIN based micro irrigation projects are expected to increase water use efficiency by about 75 percent. This technology reduces wastage of water and delivers precise amount of water to the crops.
Farmers of Purvanchal will get direct benefits
These pilot projects will not only benefit Gorakhpur and Sant Kabir Nagar but also other districts of Purvanchal. The productivity of paddy as well as Rabi and Kharif crops will increase and the irrigation cost of farmers will reduce.
The scheme will be implemented in other districts also in future
At present these projects are being implemented as pilot projects. After their successful operation, there are plans to expand them to other districts of the state also. Besides, under the PDMC component of the RKVY scheme, farmers are also being provided assistance for micro irrigation equipment like drip and sprinklers.
Decisive initiative towards sustainable agriculture and water security
These projects will provide farmers with better production at lower costs, long-term water security and modern irrigation facilities. This initiative will prove to be an important and decisive step towards sustainable agricultural development and water conservation in Uttar Pradesh.
