CBDT extended tax audit report deadline
The Income Tax Department has extended the deadline for filling the tax audit report for FY 2024-25. Now taxpayers and auditors have received this report to file this report by 31 October 2025. Earlier, the last date was fixed on 30 September 2025. But keeping in mind the demand of auditors and professional organizations, CBDT (Central Direct Tax Board) has given this relief. This decision will provide great relief to millions of taxpayers and chartered accountants, who were struggling with the challenge of completing the audit process in a short time.
The challenge was to file an audit report in a short time
Government before this ITR The deadline for filing was fixed on 15 September 2025. Due to this, the auditors got only 15 days to file a tax audit report. Under the tax law, many companies, trusts and business institutions have to submit audit reports every year by 30 September. But this year, due to lack of time and natural disasters in many areas, it was proving difficult to prepare the report in the stipulated time. Around 40 lakh tax audit reports are filed every year across the country, but by 23 September 2025 only 4 lakh reports could be submitted. In such a situation, it was practically impossible to file the remaining 36 lakh reports in just a few days.
Appeal effect
CBDT said in its official statement that it received several reactions from chartered accountant institutions and professional organizations, which requested to extend the deadline. These mentioned reasons like lack of time from taxpayers and practitioners, regional disasters and work pressure. Apart from this, the Jodhpur bench of Rajasthan High Court also directed CBDT to increase the deadline of the tax audit report by 31 October 2025 in an interim order.
This order was given on the petition of Jodhpur Tax Bar Association. Similarly, the Karnataka High Court also ordered the last date of the audit report to be extended one month on the petition of KSCAA (Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association). In view of all these appeals and circumstances, CBDT announced the new deadline under the clause (A) of Section 139 (1) of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
Technical system fully active
CBDT has also clarified that the income tax e-filing portal is fully active and is working without any technical obstruction. According to the board, by 24 September 2025, 4.02 lakh tax audit reports had been successfully uploaded. On September 24 alone, more than 60,000 reports were filed. Apart from this, more than 7.57 crore income tax returns (ITRs) have also been filed by 23 September 2025. It is clear from this figure that taxpayers are actively using the e-filing portal and the process of filling the reports continues rapidly.
