Suryakumar Yadav might not have seen this coming, but the Team India management has reportedly already decided his future in India’s T20I set up. Just three months after achieving the pinnacle of success by leading India to a historic T20 World Cup 2026 title on home soil, has been removed from his position as captain.
End of road for Suryakumar Yadav, set to lose captaincy, place in India’s T20I set up
As per an Indian Express report, in an even more surprising turn of events, the star batter is reportedly unlikely to even find a place in the squad moving forward. This dramatic overhaul comes at a critical juncture, directly ahead of India’s upcoming tours of Ireland and England, which are scheduled to commence later this month.
‘The decision will be conveyed to Surya soon’
BCCI, acting in close consultation with the national team management and the selection committee, is now preparing to appoint a new captain to spearhead the team. As Sports Tak earlier reported, Shreyas Iyer is the front-runner for the coveted role. This decisive leadership change marks the official beginning of a new T20I cycle, as selectors look to reshape the squad’s direction and build for the future.
“The selection committee, BCCI and team management, in consultation with coach Gautam Gambhir, have decided that India should go with a new skipper from here on. Under Surya’s captaincy, the team did win the T20 World Cup but keeping his form and future in mind, they felt it’s time to move on. He won’t be considered for selection, and the decision will be conveyed to Surya soon,” a top BCCI official told The Indian Express.
The national team’s upcoming tour will see them kickstart their campaign with a brief two-match T20I series in Ireland, which will serve as a precursor to a more extensive five-match T20I series against England.
Looks like Indian team management has already started looking beyond Suryakumar, who was appointed as India’s T20I captain following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the shortest format after India’s T20 World Cup 2024 title triumph, and hand over the rein to his successor, which is believed to be Shreyas Iyer.
