Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Shriprakash Jaiswal, who was ill for years, passed away. A leader whose presence changed the direction of Kanpur’s politics many times, today the same city is mourning the news of his demise. Jaiswal, a three-time MP from Kanpur, breathed his last due to heart failure.
Played important roles at the Centre, became Coal Minister in Manmohan Singh government
Shriprakash Jaiswal, who was the Union Coal Minister in the Manmohan Singh government and before that the Minister of State for Home, was an important face of national politics for a long time. His political journey was very strong and full of struggle.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, while posting on Instagram, described his demise as extremely sad. He wrote that Lord Shri Ram should give place to the departed soul at his feet and give strength to the family to bear this loss. Jaiswal, a strong Congress face from Kanpur, won the Lok Sabha elections three consecutive times from 1999 to 2014.

In its official statement, the Congress described his death as an “irreparable loss” to politics. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote that Jaiswal was an extremely dedicated and honest leader for both his region and the country. Remembering his colleague in the UPA government, he described him as a true and loyal Congressman.

With the demise of Shriprakash Jaiswal, a chapter ended which had given a new direction to the politics of Kanpur and the identity of Congress. His honesty, natural leadership and connection with the public will be remembered by future generations.
