Income tax department
Between the first quarter of FY 2025 i.e. April to June, the government has recovered the dues of ₹ 20,000 crore as income tax. This is almost double the amount from the first quarter of last year. According to the tax department, the maximum of ₹ 17,244 crore is corporate tax (from companies), ₹ 2,714 crore individual income tax (from individuals) and ₹ 180 crore TDS (tax deducted at source).
Which people recovered 20 thousand crores
This amount has been recovered from those who sent notices by the tax department by 31 March 2025. Now the Income Tax Department is preparing to intensify this recovery campaign. The department aims to make a tax collection of at least ₹ 1.96 lakh crore in the entire financial year 2025. A senior official said that the department can recover up to ₹ 2 lakh crore comfortably because the results of recovery have been good in the last few years.
These people are on radar
The department is now identifying such taxpayers who are either not showing their right income or are not deliberately paying tax. For this, CBDT has given targets of recovery to its field offices according to different zones. The special focus is on those cases in which the court’s decision has come in favor of the government.
So far in 2024-25, a tax demand of ₹ 1.96 lakh crore has been decided in such cases in which the government’s side was strong. So far this year, a total of ₹ 92,400 crore has been recovered – in which ₹ 67,711 crore is related to corporate tax, ₹ 23,536 crore individual tax and ₹ 1,100 crore TDS.
How much tax is outstanding
However, the total amount of tax arrears remains a matter of great concern for the government. According to a report by Parliament, by October 2024, the tax dues have increased to ₹ 42 lakh crore, which was only ₹ 10 lakh crore in 2019-20. Now the department is planning to recover at least ₹ 27 lakh crore from this. This recovery campaign of the government is a big step towards increasing revenue and it will be implemented more strictly in the coming months.
Most of the recovery of people of these cities
Income tax has recovered the most from taxpayers in Mumbai and Delhi. This includes 29 percent Mumbai and 21 percent of Delhi’s taxpayers.
