Big initiative of the government! GeM platform boosts fortunes of 11 lakh MSE sellers

Government e-Marketplace

Government e-Marketplace (GeM) is now emerging as a big force for small and medium businesses. According to data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, more than 11.25 lakh micro and small enterprise (MSE) sellers on the platform have so far secured government orders worth Rs 7.44 lakh crore. By November 2025, the share of MSEs in total transactions on GeM is 44.8%, much higher than the target of 25% set by the government. It is clear from this that the participation of small businessmen in the government procurement system is continuously increasing.

The objective of starting GeM was to provide transparency, speed and level playing field in the government procurement process. Be it renewable energy companies or tech startups, this platform has eliminated the old barriers like region, size and experience to a great extent.

Women-run businesses exist here

Businesses run by women are also growing rapidly on this platform. Currently, more than two lakh women entrepreneurs are connected on GeM, who have secured government orders worth more than Rs 78,000 crore. Initiatives like Womaniya are playing an important role in registration, training and capacity building for women. Facilities like separate filters for identification and priority of MSEs, women entrepreneurs and SC/ST vendors, relief in EMD and relaxation in turnover related rules have been provided on GeM. With this, more and more people are getting an opportunity to join the platform and participate in government procurement.

Women entrepreneurs achieved many big projects

In November 2025 itself, women and SC/ST entrepreneurs won several major projects, including renewable energy, security equipment, and high-tech services. Their value reached hundreds of crores of rupees. By combining digital processes and inclusive policies, GeM is strengthening missions like Digital India and Self-reliant India. The special thing is that now even a small business can get big government contracts, no matter which city, town or village it is from.
