When blood clots in the veins of the brain, it causes brain stroke. In this situation, the clot is removed with medicines, but now Indian scientists have developed a device which can easily remove these clots. It has been prepared by Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) of Puducherry. It is being called Supernova Stent Retriever. This has brought a new hope in the treatment of stroke patients. This device has been clinically tested and now it has also received DCGI approval.
According to Dr. Sunil Narayan, Professor and Head of the Neurology Department of JIPMER, this device can remove the clot even 7 to 8 hours after the stroke. It is sent through a catheter into the veins of the stroke patient’s brain, which catches the clot, pulls it out and destroys it. With the help of this technology, clots in stroke patients will be eliminated and the number of deaths due to stroke can be reduced.
According to Dr. Sunil, the price of this device can be 50 to 70 percent less than the equipment coming from abroad. If this happens then there is hope that cheap treatment will be available to the people. Clinical trials have just been successful. Approval has also been received. If it is made in India in future, then in cases of brain stroke, the patient will be able to get good treatment on time. Because the sooner the clot is removed, the better the patient’s condition will be.

In future, if this device is installed on a large scale in hospitals, it will provide more benefits at a lower cost. Since medicines can work to remove clots within three to four hours of a stroke, this device will prove to be more effective.
