Indian Women’s Hockey Team goalkeeper Bichu Devi Kharibam, at 25, is poised for her second FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup, embracing a calm and composed mindset inspired by former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni.
The Manipur-born custodian, whose journey into hockey was an accidental one after missing football trials, believes staying calm under pressure is paramount for success on the global stage.
In an exclusive interview today, Devi revealed that she frequently watches Dhoni’s biopic, finding immense motivation in his ability to maintain composure during high-stakes moments. “Just like Dhoni remains calm under pressure, I try to do the same. I believe that victory is beyond fear. No matter how much pressure comes, I will remain calm,” she stated from Amstelveen.
India Kicks Off World Cup Campaign
The 16th edition of the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup is set to commence tomorrow, August 15, 2026, co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands. India, placed in Pool D, will face a challenging group alongside China, England, and South Africa.
Salima Tete-led India will begin their quest for glory on Sunday, August 16, against China. All of India’s pool matches will be played at the iconic Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands.
