Bhumi Satish Pednekkar is in her reflective mood, and we’re here for it. As the actress gears up for the release of Daldal, she took a trip down memory lane and revealed that she reused an acting technique that she first used in Sonchiriya.
But first, Bhumi goes deep into the psyche and nature of her character DCP Rita Ferreira, revealing, “She doesn’t even express with her eyes. If you look at Rita, you don’t know what this girl is thinking. You don’t know if she likes you, if she hates you, if she appreciates your presence. Because she’s hiding so much. Even her relationship with her boyfriend, she’s constantly pushing him away.”
Given the constrictive nature of her character, the actress recalls breaking down a few days into her shooting. “You’ve literally handicapped me. I have nothing,” Bhumi shares, drawing emphasis on the stillness of her character. She reveals that it was then that director Amrit Raj Gupta stated, “That’s Rita, hold onto that – you’ve cracked it.” She adds, “After that, the journey became easier.” Bhumi recalls the complexities of playing a still character, considering she’s an expressive personality. “I’ve been trained to just be heightened when I’m doing a scene,” she says.
Bhumi takes a trip down memory lane, recalling a beautiful instance with director Abhishek Chaubey from the days of Sonchiriya and how she reused a technique in Daldal. “In Sonchiriya, he told me, ‘I don’t want you to use your eyes, I don’t want you to express with your eyes; everything has to be physical.’ I didn’t know how to do that. I trained myself to be able to do that. Because in Sonchiriya, she was somebody so suppressed. She could never have any emotion in her eyes because they would kill her. That’s why the character builds the way it does. There was a bit of that that I got into Rita as well,” she reveals.
Daldal sees Bhumi Pednekkar step into the shoes of a cop for the first time, and audiences are eager to see what’s to unfold. Directed by Amrit Raj Gupta and produced by Vikram Malhotra and Suresh Triveni, Daldal is an Abundantia Entertainment production.
