Bhishma Panchak vrat katha (Bhishma Panchak vrat katha)

The story of Bhishma Panchak is related to the famous character of Mahabharata, Bhishma Pitamah. According to this mythological story, once King Parikshit asked Mahatma Vyas ji that you told us the story of Kartik month, but why these five days from Ekadashi to Purnima are called Bhishma Panchak, we want to know in this regard and also tell us what are the benefits of fasting for these five days.

Hearing this, Mahatma Vyas ji said that once upon a time there lived a very poor Brahmin named Someshwar in Kanpur, whose body was very weak. But he was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. He would bathe in the Ganga daily in the month of Kartik and worship Lord Vishnu. One day, despite being in great pain physically, he went to take a bath in the Ganga. But due to his weak body, he could not climb down the stairs to the ghats.

Someshwar somehow got down and reached the ghat and after taking bath in the Ganga, sat there and started doing Sandhyopasana. At the same place, God was sitting in the form of a poor Brahmin to bless his devotee. Seeing the Brahmin in great pain, Lord Vishnu asked – O Brahmin, you are not even in a position to take a bath, still why have you come for a bath and tell me what do you want? Hearing this the old Brahmin said – Oh God! I am very poor and am insulted and suffer in this world. Because of this I am always worried. If you can suggest any solution, please let me know.

After listening to the Brahmin, the Brahmin in the form of God said that this Kartik month is going on and the five days from Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha to Purnima are called Bhishma Panchak. In such a situation, in five days, you should offer water to Ganga’s son Mahatma Bhishma and worship him with scent, Akshat and flowers, and worship Lord Vishnu with Tulsi flowers etc. By doing this all your troubles will go away and ultimately you will reside in Vishnu Loka. During the battle of Mahabharata, when Bhishma Pitamah was lying on his death bed, he had told his beloved Arjun about all types of royal religion, behavioral religion and knowledge religion.

At that time Arjun’s friend Shri Krishna was also there. When Krishna said to Bhishma Pitamah, O Pitamah! The person who will give water in your name and worship you from Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month till the full moon day, I will accept that worship and will remove all his troubles. In such a situation, you should worship Mahatma Bhishma in this Bhishma Panchak, and by doing this all your troubles will go away. After that, that Brahmin observed the fast of Bhishma Panchak, as a result of which he attained all the happiness and finally went to the world of Vishnu. For this reason, Bhishma Panchak fast should also be observed in the month of Kartik.
