New Delhi: A man took to Reddit to shed light on the work culture in India. The man stated his wife’s sister was denied work-from-home even after providing medical records and police documents as evidence.
The post was captioned, “Indian work culture is actually insane.” In the post, the man stated that the woman worked for an IT firm in Bengaluru. “My mother-in-law and her brother had a scooter accident last week. She fractured her arm, and her brother’s face and hand are swollen and bruised; thankfully, no fractures,” said the man. He further explained, “My wife’s younger sister lives in Bangalore and works in IT. She asked her company if she could work from home for a month since my MIL literally can’t move or do anything right now.”

He stated that the company organised a meeting and demanded evidence. “They asked for proof — she literally sent them MRI scans and the police report. They even scheduled a meeting just to tell her no, saying they had very little bandwidth in the team,” said the man. He explained that the woman’s job did not even require her to be at her workplace.
“It gets worse. Her brother — the one from the accident — was given only two days off and then told to come back to work. His younger brother now drops and picks him up every single day because he’s still in pain,” said the man.
He concluded, “I always heard about how big corporates lack empathy, but watching it happen honestly hit different. It’s disgusting.”
Reddit users quickly commented on the post. “Don’t think people are gonna be leaving in mass numbers even if you name and shame, considering how unemployed folks are struggling to find jobs in the current scenario,” said one. Another person stated, “We as society lack empathy . I feel for you and your family. We as society thrive in belittling people with whatever power we have got.”
