Bengaluru receives heavy rain with hailstorm, bringing relief from scorching heat | IMD issues orange alert

Bengaluru: People in Bengaluru were much relieved from the intense heat on Wednesday, after the city received heavy rains along with a hailstorm. The rainfall with stormy winds brought respite from the hot weather in the city after the temperature reached 37 degrees Celsius in the city.

Due to the heavy rainfall, the city witnessed waterlogging in various parts in just two hours. In many areas, there was waist-deep water, including in Richmond Town and Shanthinagar. Both areas looked like a river.

Among the areas that witnessed intense rainfall with hailstorms are MG Road, Madiwala, Bommasandra, KR Market, Jayanagar, Bannerghatta Road, Indiranagar, and Yelahanka on Wednesday afternoon. As per PTI, normal life was also impacted due to the sudden change of weather.

Karnataka CM issues statement

Meanwhile, seven people reportedly lost their lives after a wall collapsed in Bowring Hospital. Sharing a message on X, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah said, “The collapse of the compound wall due to rain in Shivajinagar, Bengaluru, resulting in the death of 7 people, is an extremely heartbreaking matter. I pray that the departed souls attain eternal peace”.

“The government will provide compensation of Rs. 5 lakhs each to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident. In the evening, I visited the incident site, obtained information from the officials, and have instructed them to undertake immediate relief measures,” he added.

Rainwater enters Vidhana Soudha

The rainwater also entered Vidhana Soudha on Wednesday. According to the agency, the water entered the government offices through the lobby. Notably, the office of the Leader of the Opposition Ashoka, too was flooded. Across the city, many office goers struggled to return on time due to the heavy rainfall. Notably, there were also reports of uprooting of trees in various parts of Bengaluru. Among areas where trees reportedly fell include Malleswaram, Shanthinagar and Seshadripuram.

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rainfall is expected in Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts from April 29 to May 1. The department also issued an Orange Alert for the northern and eastern parts of Bengaluru, while a Yellow Alert has been issued for other areas.
